Cooperative fraud case: Verdict likely on Thursday in case involving Rabi Lamichhane

The Kaski District Court is expected to deliver its verdict on Thursday in the Suryadarshan Cooperative fraud case. The court has reached the final stage after a week-long hearing, presided over by District Judge Nitij Rai.

The debate concluded on Wednesday, with senior advocates Bishnu Prasad Sharma and Mohan Bahadur Thapa defending accused Ram Bahadur Khanal, and advocates Hari Subedi and Ganga Prasad Subedi representing Krishna Bahadur Gurung. Similarly, advocates Surendra Thapa Magar and Manoj Gharti Magar argued on behalf of Mina Gurung and Arati Gurung.

Court registrar Rajan Khanal stated that the complainant’s legal team presented their rebuttal arguments on Wednesday, represented by advocates Raman Kumar Karn, Ram Ghimire, and Bed Bahadur Bista.

Court orders Rs 1 million bail for Anjila Koirala in cooperative fraud case

Anjila Koirala, wife of Rishikesh Pokharel, Chair of the Public Accounts Committee in the House of Representatives, has been ordered to post Rs 1 million bail in connection with a cooperative fraud case.

The Morang District Court issued the order, stating no grounds for her detention during the investigation.

According to court spokesperson Hem Bahadur Budhathoki, Judge Uddhab Prasad Bhattarai ruled that Koirala could be released on bail while awaiting trial.

UML to train members in social media usage to counter criticism

The Communist Party of Nepal (UML) has announced plans to train its members in using social media effectively through smartphones. This initiative aims to equip members to counter criticism and allegations made against the party on social platforms.

While the members will be trained to promote the party positively, they are strictly prohibited from publicly criticizing party policies or leadership. Violators will face disciplinary action, as warned by the party headquarters.

Party Chair and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed concerns about the increasing cyberattacks, defamation campaigns, and misinformation targeting the UML. He emphasized the need to make members “smart” to counter these issues effectively.

RSP to hold its first convention in Baishakh

The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is gearing up to hold its first convention on schedule, with central committee members expressing enthusiasm for the event.

According to spokesperson Manish Jha, the party’s meeting on January 4-5 concluded with a consensus to proceed with the convention in the first week of May.

The party’s two-day meeting was attended by 55 central committee members, all of whom supported holding the convention as planned to expand the party’s scope and assign greater responsibilities to its leaders.

Xizang quake kills 126, all-out rescue effort underway

A total of 126 people have been confirmed dead and 188 others injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake jolted southwest China’s Xizang Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning, toppling thousands of rural houses on the northern slope of the Himalayas.

The earthquake struck at 9:05 a.m. (Beijing Time), with the epicenter located in Tsogo Township, Dingri County, in the city of Xigaze. There are 27 villages and approximately 6,900 people within a 20-km radius of the epicenter.

A preliminary survey shows 3,609 houses have collapsed, said the city government of Xigaze, adding that 407 trapped people have been rescued and over 30,000 affected residents have been relocated.

Doctors sound alarm over rising flu cases in Kathmandu

The number of patients suffering from seasonal flu, colds, and viral infections has surged across Kathmandu Valley, with major hospitals like Bir Hospital, Civil Hospital, and Teaching Hospital witnessing an increasing influx of patients.

Dr Milan Khadka, a general physician at Bir Hospital, reported that roughly 30 percent of daily outpatients present with flu-like symptoms.

Speaking to Khabarhub, Dr Khadka explained that while seasonal flu typically resolves within a week, current cases are taking 10 to 12 days to subside.
