Media Act will prioritize self-regulation, says Minister Baskota

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Gokul Prasad Baskota today said that has said that the Media Act encourage self-regulation than controlling the media.

Stating that there would not be any restriction, he said that new law is being introduced internalizing the principle that free press and democracy should be taken ahead together.

He added that the new law recognized the online medium also as a mainstream medium. The Minister said that a ‘pay commission’ will be formed at least six months before the review.

Talking to a delegation of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) today, he also said that the provision would be made to open a mass communications training academy in accordance with the university courses.

The government is all set to register the bill related to this in the current session of the parliament.

The Bill Related to Media Council, which has already been tabled at the National Assembly (NA) is currently under discussion.
