191 accident deaths recorded Koshi Province in past five months

KATHMANDU: Motorcycle accidents have emerged as the leading cause of road mishaps in Koshi Province, with 2,092 cases reported in the past five months, according to the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office.

In the first five months of the current fiscal year, a total of 3,498 vehicle accidents occurred across the province. Among these, motorcycles accounted for the highest number, followed by auto rickshaws, SUVs, and car accidents, said Rameshwor Twati, the office’s information officer.

Twati credited the high number of motorcycle accidents to ongoing upgrades on the Asian Highway along the East-West Highway.

“The absence of zebra crossings and traffic signals has contributed significantly to accidents,” he said. “Reckless driving at high speeds has also caused many human casualties.”

A total of 191 fatalities were reported, with 327 individuals suffering serious injuries during the five-month period.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, particularly as infrastructure upgrades continue across the region.
