Karnali in playoffs despite loss, Kathmandu eliminated

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Gurkhas has become the fourth team to be eliminated from the league stage of the Nepal Premier League (NPL).

Kathmandu, currently in fifth place with 8 points, has been eliminated based on their run rate.

Kathmandu had a slim chance of reaching the playoffs after Karnali Yaks suffered a heavy defeat to Sudurpaschim Royals on Monday.

Despite losing by 6 wickets in that match, Karnali Yaks have secured a spot in the playoffs.

Karnali, batting first after losing the toss at the Kirtipur ground, were bowled out for 101 runs in their 20 overs, setting a target of 102 runs for Sudurpaschim.

In reply, Sudurpaschim comfortably chased down the target in 15.2 overs, losing 4 wickets in the process.

Kathmandu’s hopes of making the playoffs hinged on Sudurpaschim reaching the target in 13 overs or less, but with the chase completed in 15.2 overs, Kathmandu’s exit was confirmed.

Sudurpaschim Royals are now at the top of the table with 12 points, having won 6 out of 7 matches in the league stage.

Janakpur Bolts, with 10 points from 7 matches, are in second place, having lost 2 games in the league stage.
