NEW DELHI: Former NASA astronaut Donald A Thomas has said that NASA — the US space agency and people around the world would be watching the Chandrayaan-2 landing on the surface of the moon.

Chandrayaan-2, which is scheduled to land on the moon on September 7, will be the first spacecraft to land near the moon’s South Pole. “This is where NASA hopes to land an astronaut in about five years from now,” Thomas said.

He added that besides NASA, the whole world would be interested to know about the moon and the universe through Chandrayaan-2.

Speaking to reporters after a program in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, he said that they have landed near the equator of the moon before but not at the South Pole.

According to him, it ice is found at the South Pole, then there can be water and from that oxygen and hydrogen.

Chandrayaan-2 will be India’s first expedition to attempt a soft landing on the lunar surface. The mission will make India, the fourth country after Russia, the US, and China to carry out a soft landing on the moon. (Agencies)
