Tourism Minister Pandey commits for sustainable operation of  Gautam Buddha International Airport

LUMBINI: Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation Minister Badri Prasad Pandey has assured the government’s commitment to the operation of Gautam Buddha International Airport, emphasizing that international flights will not be halted.

Speaking at an interaction organized by the Siddhartha Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bhairahawa on Saturday, Minister Pandey addressed concerns raised by business representatives and pledged regular oversight to ensure the airport’s sustainability.

The minister highlighted the airport’s strategic location in central Nepal, near Buddha’s birthplace, Lumbini, stating it offers convenience for passengers and aligns with the region’s tourism potential.

He committed to visiting the airport twice a month and even suggested operating his office from Bhairahawa to prioritize its development.

“Situated between Mechi and Mahakali, and close to Lumbini and Pokhara, this airport must succeed,” Pandey said, adding that it will serve as a tourism hub.

He further mentioned that labor, visa, medical, and manpower-related offices essential for the airport’s operation had already been approved in July.

These measures, he assured, will be implemented promptly following a high-level meeting in Kathmandu.

Minister Pandey also affirmed that the airport’s success would complement the operation of Pokhara International Airport, stressing the interconnection between tourism development in both regions.

He concluded by emphasizing his commitment to sustainable operations and necessary reforms in Lumbini and the airport infrastructure.
