Waste volume up in Bancharedanda

KATHMANDU: The volume of garbage to be disposed of at Bancharedanda has increased with the rise in river-based waste.

According to the Kathmandu Metropolitan City’s department of environment management, the Bancharedanda – a waste management site of the Kathmandu Valley has to manage the waste also generated by the floods and landslides of late.

The garbage collected daily has increased considerably. Earlier, 200 vehicles were used for disposal of waste piled up in 18 local governments in the Valley, while 300 vehicles are being used daily following the rainfall on October 13.

At present, 1,600 metric tons of waste is being managed daily. Bancharedanda has been used as the last waste management site for the past two years after the waste being managed in the erstwhile Sisdol was filled up.

The metropolis has reiterated the need to manage waste at source, saying managing all the waste generated in the Valley would reduce the life span of the area.

“The reusable waste has also reached Bancharedanda. Raw materials containing rotten manure are also being taken there. The goods that can be sold from production area have also been taken to Bancharedanda. The life expectancy of the place can be extended only if such acts are put to an end”, said environment department chief Sarita Rai.
