BAGLUNG: Ten people have died and one remains missing after landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in Baglung district.
The district has suffered significant loss of life over the past two days. Nine people died on Sunday, while one remains missing. One person died on Saturday.
According to Phanindra Prasai, chief of the District Police Office, Baglung, four people died and one went missing in Tamankhola Rural Municipality on Sunday, while five people died in Nisikhola Rural Municipality.
Buddhiraj Gharti, 80, and Bhimdevi Gharti, 66, died after their house was buried by a landslide at Dharnasuk in Tamankhola Rural Municipality-3. The landslide also swept away eight houses in the area.
Hastabir Shreepali, 50, and Udisara Shreepali, 65, died after their house was buried at Santar in Tamankhola Rural Municipality-4. Hastabir’s wife remains missing following the landslide.
Four members of the same family died after a landslide buried their house near the Jugjakhola River in Nisikhola Rural Municipality-3. The deceased have been identified as Shyam Kumari BK, 36, and her sons Manoj, 13, Mukesh, 8, and Nishan BK, 3.
Similarly, Surya Bahadur Gharti, 50, died after a landslide buried a shed at Rangeel in Nisikhola Rural Municipality-6. On Saturday, Man Bahadur Roka, 59, died after a landslide buried his house at Dhasmar in Tarakhola Rural Municipality-5.
According to Baglung Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Acharya, further casualties were prevented through early warning measures. A team of security personnel, along with a Nepal Army helicopter, reached the landslide-affected areas for rescue operations.
Floods, landslides damage 24 houses in Tanahun
Floods and landslides have damaged 24 houses across six local levels in Tanahun following heavy rainfall over the past few days.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Dwarika Prasad Ghimire of the District Police Office, Tanahun, five houses were damaged in Byas Municipality, two in Myagde Rural Municipality, six in Ghiring Rural Municipality, two in Rishing Rural Municipality, four in Bandipur Rural Municipality and five in Bhanu Municipality.
Police teams have moved the affected families to safer locations. Police said details of the damage are being collected.
The landslide also damaged a rice mill in Byas Municipality-1, soaking around 100 sacks of paddy. A poultry farm and a pig pen at Malebagar in Bhimad Municipality-6 were also washed away.
Flood damages Sita Cave complex in Devghat
Flooding in the Kaligandaki River has washed away several structures and belongings at the Sita Cave complex in Devghat Rural Municipality-5, Tanahun.
According to the District Police Office, Tanahun, the flood swept away a toilet, bathroom, an Omkar idol featuring 108 Shivalingas carved into a large stone, stored goods and bedding.
After receiving information about the incident, a police team from the Area Police Office, Devghat, reached the site. Deputy Superintendent of Police Ghimire said police moved 76-year-old priest Shivananda Giri, who had been performing worship at the Sita Cave, to a safe location.
