Supreme Court denies release of Durga Prasai

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has declined to order the release of controversial medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, who was arrested earlier this week.

The court’s decision came during a hearing on a petition filed by Prasai’s son, Niraj, challenging the legality of his father’s arrest.

The bench of Supreme Court Justice Prakashmansingh Raut rejected the plea for Prasai’s release, instead issuing a show cause order, requiring the government to provide an explanation for the arrest.

Prasai was arrested on Sunday afternoon from his residence in Thimi, Bhaktapur, by the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police. The arrest followed a complaint lodged by Jwala Sangraula, a central member of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.

The Kathmandu District Court had earlier granted police permission to detain Prasai for three days to facilitate further investigation.

On Tuesday afternoon, Prasai gave a two-hour statement at the district attorney’s office in Kathmandu before being returned to custody.

Following his arrest, Prasai was admitted to Bir Hospital due to high blood pressure but was discharged and returned to police custody later today.
