KATHMANDU: The Weather Forecasting Division has forecasted that monsoon is likely to become active starting Thursday evening and continue through Saturday morning.

The Division has warned of heavy rainfall in certain regions and urged the public to take necessary precautions.

It stated that the influence of monsoon air is already present in the country.

The low-pressure system associated with the monsoon is currently situated south of its usual position.

Despite the current weather conditions, this system, which is positioned around Madhya Pradesh in India, is expected to develop further and move northwest towards Nepal.

Due to the effect of this system, the monsoon is likely to become more active, bringing rain especially to the western region of Nepal from Thursday evening to Saturday morning.

The rainfall will vary across different provinces: Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces are expected to experience normal to heavy rain, while other provinces will see partial to normal changes in precipitation.

The Division has also forecasted light to moderate rain with possible thunder, lightning, and windstorms across many areas in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, with heavy to very heavy rain expected in a few locations, particularly in Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces.

The Division has warned that the rains may lead to soil erosion, flooding, landslides, and potential inundation in urban and low-lying areas.
