KATHMANDU: Electricity consumption in Nepal has tripled over the past eight years.

In the fiscal year 2072/73, the consumption stood at 3.72 billion units, which surged to 10.2 billion units in the fiscal year 2080/81, marking an increase of 6.51 billion units, according to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).

In the last fiscal year, 4.31 billion units were consumed for domestic purposes, while 3.69 billion units were used for industrial purposes.

Per capita electricity consumption has also risen significantly, from 131 units to 400 units over the same period.

Eight years ago, Nepal experienced daily load shedding of eight hours during the monsoon season, with predictions of up to 14 hours of daily load shedding in winter.

However, by the beginning of 2075 BS, Nepal was declared load shedding-free.

Access to electricity has also expanded dramatically, from 58 percent of households eight years ago to 99 percent now.
