Monsoon-related disaster claims 173 lives



KATHMANDU: Incessant rains this year have led to the deaths of 173 people across the country from various natural disasters, including floods and landslides.

The casualties are distributed as follows: three in Kathmandu Valley, 26 in Koshi Province, seven in Madhes Province, 31 in Bagmati Province, 54 in Gandaki Province, 33 in Lumbini Province, eight in Karnali Province, and 11 in Sudurpaschim Province.

Additionally, the disasters have resulted in injuries to 11 people in Kathmandu Valley, 37 in Koshi Province, 11 in Madhes Province, 23 in Bagmati Province, 46 in Gandaki Province, 13 in Lumbini Province, 54 in Karnali Province, and 28 in Sudurpaschim Province, according to Deputy Inspector General of Police Dan Bahadur Karki.

Efforts to rescue those affected have been ongoing, with 113 people rescued in Kathmandu Valley, 49 in Koshi Province, 12 in Bagmati Province, 14 in Gandaki Province, three in Lumbini Province, two in Karnali Province, and five in Sudurpaschim Province.

According to Karki, two people are missing in Koshi Province, 41 in Bagmati Province, two in Gandaki Province, one in Lumbini Province, one in Karnali Province, and one in Sudurpaschim Province.

Search operations for these missing individuals are continuing.

Floods have inundated a total of 384 houses.

Damaged infrastructure includes 275 houses, 144 sheds, 43 bridges, two schools, and two government offices.

Additionally, 812 livestock have died due to the floods. Spokesperson Karki noted that 4,322 families have been displaced by these disasters.
