Govt forms probe committee over Israel employment selection concerns

In response to growing concerns about the selection process for migrant laborers heading to Israel, the Ministry of Labor, Employment, and Social Security has formed an investigation committee. The committee was established following public concerns regarding the authenticity of documents submitted during the selection process. Israel is set to welcome migrant laborers from Nepal for the caregiver sector. According to a press statement from the Ministry, the committee will verify the authenticity of the submitted documents and ensure that the selection process is both reliable and transparent.

Sudurpaschim province assembly session summoned for August 11

The Chief of Sudurpaschim Province, Nazir Miya, has summoned the fifth session of the Province Assembly (PA) for 2:00 PM on August 11. According to the PA Secretariat, the session was convened by the Province Chief on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, in accordance with Article 183(1) of the Constitution. The Sudurpaschim government prorogued the fourth session two days ago and introduced an ordinance on revenue collection on Thursday, which was authenticated by the Province Chief the same day.

170 dead in monsoon-induced disasters across Nepal

A total of 170 people have lost their lives in monsoon-induced disasters across Nepal since the start of this year’s monsoon season. The fatalities are distributed as follows: three in Kathmandu Valley, 25 in Koshi Province, six in Madhesh Province, 31 in Bagmati Province, 54 in Gandaki Province, 33 in Lumbini Province, eight in Karnali Province, and 10 in Sudurpaschim Province. In addition to the deaths, numerous injuries have been reported: 11 in Kathmandu Valley, 37 in Koshi, 10 in Madhesh, 19 in Bagmati, 46 in Gandaki, 13 in Lumbini, 53 in Karnali, and 14 in Sudurpaschim Province.

Janamat Party demands clarification from Madhesh Province CM over ‘Jumbo Cabinet’

The Dr. CK Raut-led Janamat Party has demanded an explanation from Madhesh Province Chief Minister Satish Kumar Singh regarding his “Jumbo Cabinet.” The Janamat Party raised concerns after CM Singh expanded his cabinet to nearly double the necessary number of ministers. Dr. Sharad Singh Yadav, the party’s spokesperson, confirmed that a formal clarification has been sought from CM Singh. On Tuesday, CM Singh expanded his cabinet to 20 members by appointing five new State Ministers. The size of CM Singh’s Cabinet now nearly mirrors that of the central government, raising questions and controversies. This Cabinet is the largest of its kind at the provincial level since the introduction of federalism in Nepal, despite the province having only 12 ministries.

NEA reports accumulated profit of Rs 47.41 billion

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has achieved an accumulated profit of Rs 47.41 billion, according to Managing Director Kulman Ghising. Speaking at a press conference marking the third anniversary of his second tenure, Ghising noted the significant turnaround in the NEA’s financial status. “Eight years ago, NEA was facing an accumulated loss of Rs 34.61 billion,” he stated. Under Ghising’s leadership, electricity consumption in Nepal has seen a significant rise, increasing from 3.32 billion units eight years ago to 10.23 billion units today.

Judicial Council recommends appointment of 35 district judges

The Judicial Council has recommended the appointment of 35 new District Judges. The recommendation was made during a Council meeting held on Friday. The meeting was chaired by Chief Justice Biswambhar Prasad Shrestha and attended by Law Minister Ajay Chaurasiya, Senior Supreme Court Judge Prakash Man Singh Raut, and members Ram Prasad Shrestha and Ram Prasad Bhandari. In addition to the appointments, the Council also decided to transfer 21 District Judges.

Victims relaunch protests demanding justice in Nirmala Kurmi murder case

The victims of the Nirmala Kurmi murder case have reignited their protest, demanding justice and condemning the appointment of Badshah Kurmi as a Minister in the Lumbini Province government. The protesters, including relatives of the victim and women’s rights activists, accuse the ruling alliance of appointing Kurmi to protect him from the ongoing investigation. Nirmala Kurmi, a resident of Nepalgunj-17, Paraspur Banke, went missing in April last year and was later found dead under mysterious circumstances. Her land was fraudulently transferred during her disappearance, further raising suspicions.

Gold price up by Rs 1,500 per tola today

Gold price has increased by Rs 1,500 per tola in the domestic market today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, fine gold is priced at Rs 148,100 per tola today. On Thursday, fine gold was traded at Rs 146,600 per tola. Meanwhile, the price of silver has been fixed at Rs 1,730 per tola.

Dengue cases surge in Kaski

Kaski district reported 40 new cases of dengue fever, bringing the total number of cases in the past week to 75, according to the District Health Office, Kaski. As of now, the number of dengue patients has reached 362 since January 2024, Office Chief Ram Bahadur Nepali confirmed. Nepali warned that the situation could worsen significantly if the outbreak is not contained promptly. “Dengue fever is spreading rapidly in some wards of Pokhara Metropolitan City,” he added. Ward No. 8 of Pokhara Metropolitan City has reported the highest number of cases, with 16 out of 319 cases in the city.

Earthquake felt in eastern Nepal

An earthquake was felt in several eastern districts, including Biratnagar on Friday morning. The tremor of 4.5 magnitude, which originated near the center of Sikkim in India, was felt in surrounding areas, including Biratnagar, the capital of Koshi Province at 7:12 am. The epicenter was located approximately 22 km from Darjeeling.

Nagpanchami festival celebrated today

The Nagpanchami festival was celebrated today by worshiping the Nag or serpent god, with many pasting pictures of a Nag on the front door of the house as per Hindu tradition. This festival is celebrated every year on the fifth day of Shrawan Shukla as per the Lunar calendar. There is a religious belief that hanging a picture of a serpent in the house will avoid harm from snakes and scorpions, as well as from incidents of fire and lightning. The practice of Nag worship is believed to have started in the Vedic period.
