Imminent crisis averted, opposition’s game plan doomed: PM Dahal

Prime Minister (PM) Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, who is also Chairman of Maoist Center, said that despite various attempts by the opposition to destabilize the government, their efforts will now fall flat. Addressing a meeting of the Maoist Center’s parliamentary party at Singha Durbar on Friday, PM Dahal assured members that the ruling coalition will remain intact and urged them to serve the people with confidence. In his briefing on current political affairs, he highlighted the challenges faced in passing the budget smoothly through Parliament. “It was tough, but that phase is behind us now. The rumors are baseless; there’s no crisis,” one MP relayed PM Dahal’s words from the meeting.

Tensions have surfaced among key leaders of major political parties following a meeting between Madhav Kumar Nepal, Chairman of the Unified Socialist Party and a coalition partner in the government, and Sher Bahadur Deuba, President of the main opposition party Nepali Congress, at Budhanilkantha on Wednesday. According to sources, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli expressed their concern about leader Nepal’s participation in the opposition parties’ meeting at Budhanilkantha. The meeting has left leaders of the ruling coalition wary after Nepal’s presence during the opposition parties’ gathering in Budhanilkantha.

Parliamentary committee to investigate cooperative scam to start work from Sunday

The parliamentary committee formed to investigate cooperative-related fraud has decided to commence its work starting this Sunday. The government established the “Parliamentary Investigation Special Committee” after sustained pressure from the opposition alliance led by the main opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC). Led by CPN-UML lawmaker Surya Bahadur Thapa Kshetri, the committee has temporarily set up its office within the Parliament Secretariat itself.

PM Dahal urges Maoist Center lawmakers to advocate for Budget 2024/25

Prime Minister and Chairman of CPN-Maoist Center, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has urged party lawmakers to voice their support for the budget presented by the government in the federal parliament on May 28. Speaking at the party’s parliamentary meeting held at Singha Durbar on Friday, the Maoist Chair defended the government’s policies and programs as progressive. He encouraged lawmakers to emphasize the strengths of the budget tabled by the party-led government. Maoist Center Chief Whip, Hitraj Pandey, stated that lawmakers are engaging in discussions on various aspects of the budget during the meeting.

Ex-Chairman of Kantipur Cooperatives Lama arrested

CB Lama, the former Chairman of Kantipur Savings and Cooperatives and current Chairman of Pashupati Savings and Credit, has been arrested. A team from the Valley Crime Investigation Office arrested Lama in Chitwan. He is being transferred to Kathmandu, according to the police. Lama faces charges of misusing Rs 8 billion from the two cooperatives. A complaint was lodged against him, accusing him of misusing Rs 6 billion from Kantipur Cooperatives and Rs 2 billion from Pashupati Savings and Credit.

Tharka Lama arrested in connection with 60kg gold smuggling case

Tharka Man Lama of Kavre has been arrested in connection with the 61 kg gold smuggling case. The Valley Crime Investigation Office arrested the 45-year-old Lama in Lazimpat. Earlier, a commission formed to probe the case had recommended investigations against several suspects. Lama’s arrest follows this recommendation, according to the police. The case was initially investigated by the Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB).

Gold price hits record high

The price of gold increased by Rs 1,700 per tola in the domestic market today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of fine gold has been fixed at Rs 142,200 per tola, while standard gold is currently traded at Rs 141,500 per tola. This marks the highest price for gold to date. On Thursday, the price of fine gold was Rs 140,500 per tola, and standard gold was traded at Rs 139,800 per tola.

A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court (SC) against the decision of Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to punish traffic rule violators by making them serve as volunteers on the road.
