World Red Cross Day being observed today

KATHMANDU: Nepal is commemorating World Red Cross Day today, rallying under the banner of ‘Keep Humanity Alive’ with various events and initiatives.

World Red Cross Day, observed annually on the birthday of the Red Cross pioneer, John Henry Dunant, marks the inception of the Red Cross movement in 1863.

In an era marked by technological advancements, the global community faces challenges to humaneness posed by conflicts, violence, and discrimination alongside the daunting task of safeguarding humanity amidst the impacts of climate change-induced disasters, droughts, and famines.

This year’s theme, ‘Keep Humanity Alive,’ underscores the imperative of nurturing the essence of humanity, championed by volunteers who tirelessly serve to alleviate human suffering in an increasingly uncertain and divided world.

On this occasion, Red Cross workers are anticipated to renew their dedication to upholding human dignity, mitigating suffering, and extending assistance to the most vulnerable communities.

Guided by fundamental principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteerism, unity, and universality, the Red Cross movement stands as the world’s largest humanitarian network, annually aiding over 95 million people during armed conflicts and diverse crises.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) reports a staggering participation of over 16 million volunteers across 191 national societies worldwide, showcasing the immense reach and impact of the Red Cross campaign.

Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General, and Chief Executive Officer of IFRC, emphasized the pressing need for humanitarian action in the face of escalating disasters spurred by climate change, urging concerted efforts to defend humanity.
