EU Ambassador Lorenzo urges political prioritization of Waste Management in Nepal

BARDIBAS: Veronique Lorenzo, the EU Ambassador to Nepal, stressed the importance of internalizing waste management as a top political priority.

Speaking at an interaction with stakeholders organized by Creasion Nepal in Bardibas Municipality on Tuesday, Ambassador Lorenzo underscored the need for environmental protection to be integrated into political agendas.

She emphasized that environmental protection should not only be a concern for individuals but also a key focus for political leaders.

Ambassador Lorenzo highlighted the significance of raising widespread awareness and prioritizing waste management at both local and national levels.

“Political discussions on waste management should be prioritized,” she stated. “By linking these discussions to the circular economy, we can achieve economic prosperity while safeguarding the environment.”

Thomas Prinz, the German Ambassador for Nepal, also expressed his interest in Bardibas municipality’s efforts in waste management.

Tara Devi Mahato, Deputy Mayor of Bardibas Municipality, mentioned the municipality’s collaboration with Creasion Nepal for policymaking in waste management.

She stressed the need for political and policy clarity to effectively manage waste in the long term.

Christiane Kamille, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Sweden (based in Delhi), highlighted waste management as a global issue that requires clear political direction for resolution.

Similarly, Gilles BOURBAO, the Ambassador of France, and Eloisa Astudillo Fernandez, Deputy Head of Cooperation at the European Union Delegation to Nepal, were also present at the event.

With the support of the European Union, Creasion Nepal is conducting the GreenShift project in collaboration with Bardibas municipality.
The project aims to establish “Climate Smart Schools” in four selected schools in Bardibas Municipality.

Through this initiative, students will develop critical awareness and knowledge about plastic waste management.
