Adverse weather disrupts air travel in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Adverse weather conditions have disrupted air travel across the country, impacting both domestic and international flights, according to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) officials.

Airport spokesperson Subash Jha reported that poor visibility has led to the disruption of several flights, with some international flights experiencing diversions and delays.

“Due to low visibility, certain international flights have been affected,” stated Jha. He further mentioned that an Air China flight was diverted, while others were placed on hold. Currently, a Sichuan Airlines aircraft remains on hold.

Jha explained, “The airport’s visibility has been significantly affected by adverse weather. An hour ago, visibility stood at only 1,600 meters, but it has now improved to 2,500 meters. International flights that were on hold are gradually being allowed to land.”

Meanwhile, operations at Pokhara International Airport have also been suspended for domestic flights. However, flights are continuing as scheduled at airports in the Terai region.

Tribhuvan International Airport serves as a hub for 30 airlines, including three Nepalese carriers, facilitating international flights. Additionally, 20 air service providers, including 12 helicopter companies, operate domestic flight services.
