KATHMANDU: Former Vice President Nanda Kishor Pun’s “lavish mansion” in Kathmandu’s Chandragiri has sparked curiosity regarding its funding source.
Transitioning from a modest residence in Kapan to a luxurious palace in Chandragiri’s Dahachowk within a decade prompts legitimate inquiries into the origins of the wealth financing this ostentatious property, according to Nepali Congress lawmaker Rajendra Kumar KC.
Questions loom over the means by which Pun amassed the resources necessary for such a substantial investment.
According to KC, 10 years ago, Pun resided in a modest dwelling in Kapan.
Given his prominent status as a former Vice President, there is a heightened expectation for transparency and accountability regarding the funding of his opulent abode.
Nepali Congress’ Member of Parliament KC questions the sudden leap in lifestyle which he said invites scrutiny, necessitating a thorough examination of his financial records and assets to shed light on the legitimacy of his property acquisition.
In a statement delivered in the House of Representatives on Friday, NC lawmaker KC called into question the integrity of Home Minister Lamichhane amid allegations of misconduct.
Meanwhile, recent political developments have brought to light concerning issues of corruption and misuse of power in the government.
Finance Minister Barsaman Pun, too, is embroiled in a scandal involving gold smuggling.
Reports suggest that Barsaman had engaged in 19 telephone conversations with known gold smugglers, raising questions about his involvement in illicit activities.
While call details remain undisclosed, there are calls for transparency in Parliament regarding these conversations.
In another concerning development, KC also raised allegations against Rabi Lamichhane, who assumed the role of Home Minister in the current Cabinet.
Lamichhane’s involvement in the Swarna Laxmi Cooperative, where he acquired Rs 46 lakh rupees loan to purchase a car, has sparked outrage.
The Cooperative, intended to support vulnerable workers and uplift communities, should not be exploited for personal gain by government officials, according to KC.
Lamichhane’s actions, KC noted, cast doubt on his integrity and raise serious concerns about his ability to address the needs of cooperative victims while serving as Home Minister.
KC’s stance underscored the commitment to accountability and transparency within Nepal’s political landscape, signaling the imperative for elected officials to uphold ethical standards and prioritize the interests of the populace.

KC emphasized the universal principle that perpetrators cannot serve as arbiters of justice for victims, highlighting the inherent conflict of interest in Lamichhane’s current position.
Urging Lamichhane to step aside until a thorough investigation into his financial dealings as MD and the extent of his borrowings from the cooperative is conducted, KC made it clear that the Congress party will not endorse Lamichhane’s continuation as Home Minister under any circumstances.
