I exerted efforts to stabilize the economy: Former Minister Mahat

PATAN: Former Finance Minister, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, asserted that he tirelessly worked to restore the economy to normal during his tenure.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Nepali Congress Party Central Office in Lalitpur today, Dr. Mahat clarified that the economic indicators were not negative, emphasizing the hard work invested in achieving positive outcomes.

“The country’s economy was under pressure when I assumed the role of Finance Minister. We made relentless efforts to bring the economy back to normal. Statistics published by the Nepal Rastra Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the World Bank also support this assertion,” he stressed.

When appointed as Finance Minister, the inflation rate stood at 8.5 percent, and it has now decreased to five percent.

Dr. Mahat attributed this positive change to the decreasing interest rates in banks, a result of a liberal monetary policy aimed at resolving issues in the country’s economy.

He highlighted the satisfactory increase in revenue collection, noting a 10 percent growth compared to the previous fiscal year.

The former Finance Minister emphasized that he prioritized good governance and frugality during his time in the government.

Dr. Mahat further stated that numerous investors were prepared to participate in the investment summit scheduled for April.

He claimed that his efforts were directed at attracting more foreign investment through the upcoming summit.

In a different context, Dr. Mahat clarified that the Nepali Congress strongly supported the then-ruling alliance, with the party’s Mahasamiti meeting deciding to maintain continuity within the same alliance.
