Policeman loses life in detainee escape attempt in Darchula

DARCHULA: A police constable lost his life during an attempt by a detainee to escape from police detention.

The incident occurred at the District Police Office in Darchula when the detainee, Umesh Singh Kunwar from Mahakali Municipality-1, tried to flee during police interrogation.

According to the District Police Office, Kunwar, who was in the detention cell, attempted to escape, resulting in injuries to the police constable who was handcuffed to prevent Kunwar from fleeing.

Suhan Chaudhary attempted to stop Kunwar from running away, leading to a fatal fall of 100 meters behind the district police office.

Chaudhary sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead at the hospital.

Kunwar managed to escape by jumping across the Mahakali River and heading towards India.

Inspector Gyanendra Bahadur Singh mentioned that the police crossed the river, reached the Indian side, and coordinated with the Gorkha regiment in India to detain Kunwar.

Kunwar had previously stabbed two on-duty policemen on January 21 and was arrested by the police on March 5.

The arrest followed a complaint of kidnapping and abuse filed by his wife, Dhanisha Kunwar.

During his initial arrest, Kunwar stabbed Jaya Bahadur Khadka and Dambar Bahadur Thagunna, causing serious injuries.

Thagunna suffered significant injuries near the eye, while Khadka and jawan Dambar Bahadur were also injured. The police are conducting an investigation and have registered a case against Kunwar for kidnapping, extortion, and attempted escape.
