Cuban leader Che Guevara’s daughter Aleida in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Aleida Guevara March, the eldest daughter of Cuban revolutionary leader Che Guevara, is currently in Nepal to attend a regional conference on solidarity with Cuba. She arrived in Nepal after meeting Communist leaders in India.

Addressing the 9th Asia Pacific Regional Conference on Solidarity with Cuba organized at Hotel Malla in Kathmandu on Friday, she expressed dissatisfaction over the images of her father being marketized and sold as commodities.

Chairman of ruling Nepal Communist Party Pushpa Kamal Dahal (4th from right) along with other participants in Kathmandu, Nepal.

“His revolutionary thoughts and ideas have been restricted. He doesn’t deserve this disrespect. Nevertheless, he fought against this enemy. So, one cannot hope better from them,” she said addressing the conference.

Speaking after inaugurating the conference, Chairman of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal said that despite decades of sanctions, blockades and other restrictions, Cuba has demonstrated to the world that unjust behavior cannot kill the conscience of the peace and freedom-loving people.

“The Embargo against Cuba has not weakened Cuban people’s patience, nationalist vision, and defense of sovereignty,” he said.

The former prime minister said that sanction against Cuba is against the universal norms and values of human rights.

“The UN General Assembly adopts every year a resolution calling for an end to the embargo with an overwhelming majority. It has been almost 26 years that the international community has rejected the sanctions against Cuba. Yet, despite strong global call, it is continuing. Nepal has consistently and unequivocally voted UN resolution in favor of Cuba,” he said.

During the function, Spokesperson of ruling Nepal Communist Party Narayan Kaji Shrestha also expressed his solidarity against the embargo on Cuba.

The Cuban delegation to Nepal also includes Cuban spy Fernando Gonzalez who was arrested in the USA and later release  after completing his sentence.

The conference is being attended by representatives from 17 countries including Greece, India, Australia, and the United States of America among others. The conference will conclude on Saturday. The closing ceremony will be attended by NCP leader and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal.

The incumbent government of Nepal has hosted leaders from countries, including Venezuela and Cuba, which are currently facing sanctions by the United States (US). It may be recalled that Venezuelan President’s son Nicolas Ernesto Maduro Guerra who arrived in Nepal clandestinely along with his three ministers in the second of July this year, had received high honors in Nepal. The leader from the South American country had received a VVIP security with escorting vehicles in Nepal.

Likewise, the incumbent government, too, has failed to tighten measures to control illegal activities carried out by North Koreans in Nepal.
