Pre-monsoon spell initiates: Cloudy weather forecast across Nepal

KATHMANDU: The onset of the pre-monsoon spell in Nepal marks the conclusion of winter, which, this year, was milder and less rainy than anticipated.

Although the pre-monsoon season officially commenced last Friday with the waning of winter, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology suggests it will take a few more days for the pre-monsoon to reach its full activity.

The current cloudy weather is the first notable occurrence since the initiation of the pre-monsoon period, noted Rojan Lamichhane, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division.

He attributed the recent cloud cover to the influence of the Westerly wind and moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea.

Lamichhane stated that the cloudiness is more prevalent in the Lumbini, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Karnali provinces, while it is comparatively less in Sudurpaschim, Koshi, and Madhes provinces at present.

He added that the latter provinces will also experience cloudier conditions as the clouds progress toward them.

This trend is expected to intensify until tonight, with weather conditions gradually improving from tomorrow.

Meteorologist Lamichhane anticipated that the western region will observe increased cloudiness tonight.

Kathmandu has been experiencing light rainfall since the morning today.

The winter period for this year spanned from November 2, 2023, to February 29, 2024.

Despite the conclusion of winter, the impact of the Westerly wind still persists, according to the Meteorological Forecasting Division.
