Orthopedic maestro Dr. Sharma highlights simplified treatments and advances in joint replacement

KATHMANDU: Renowned orthopedic surgeon Prof Dr. Rajeev K. Sharma, Chairperson of the Indian Orthopedic Association, recently shared insights during a visit to Kathmandu.

He emphasized the evolving landscape of orthopedic treatments, highlighting advancements that have simplified complex surgeries.

Dr. Sharma, with a wealth of experience from institutions like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Apollo Hospital, spoke about the remarkable progress in orthopedics.

He expressed that modern medical processes, incorporating high-tech solutions, have made procedures like organ and joint transplants more feasible.

In a noteworthy experience, Dr. Sharma successfully transplanted a hip for a 94-year-old patient.

He discussed the shift in perspective regarding joint replacements for the elderly.

Despite initial reservations, the patient’s willingness and the success of the procedure showcased the positive impact of evolving medical technologies.

Traditionally, orthopedic issues required surgical interventions, but Dr. Sharma highlighted the paradigm shift brought by advanced replacement methods.

Joint transplants have become commonplace for patients across age groups, from minors to seniors.

Dr. Sharma acknowledged that public awareness of medical advancements has increased, yet there remains hesitation, particularly concerning organ transplants.

He noted prevalent fears of infection, complications, and the perceived pain associated with the procedures.

Exploring the reasons behind the rising prevalence of fragile bones, Dr. Sharma attributed it to dietary habits, sedentary lifestyles, and the pursuit of comfort.

He highlighted the detrimental effects of excessive junk food consumption, obesity, lack of physical exercise, and smoking on bone health.

In response to the changing landscape, Dr. Sharma recommended alternatives such as cycling or swimming over intense gym workouts for maintaining healthy bones and joints.

He stressed the importance of civic awareness, education, and accessible treatment facilities.

Having performed over 15,000 total joint replacements, including surgeries for prominent figures like Nepal’s former President Bidya Devi Bhandari, Dr. Sharma advocates for healthcare coverage through insurance schemes.

He believes that healthcare accessibility should be a priority to prevent and address orthopedic issues.

Recognized for his contributions, Dr. Sharma received the Janasewa Shree Padak from the Government of Nepal.

His commitment to advancing medical practices in Nepal is evident through his collaborations with institutions like Nepal Orthopedic Hospital.

Dr. Sharma emphasized the need for continuous education, awareness, and the exchange of advanced treatment methods to elevate orthopedic care in Nepal.
