Floor crossing in Koshi during NA elections raises serious concerns for ruling coalition
The ruling coalition has carefully assessed the matter of floor crossing that took place during the National Assembly member elections in Koshi province. In a meeting convened on Tuesday at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar, the ruling coalition initiated discussions on the National Assembly election results, giving special attention to the significant occurrence of floor crossing in Koshi. Following the meeting, Ramesh Lekhak, the Chief Whip of Nepali Congress, conveyed that the coalition thoroughly reviewed the results of the NA election and expressed serious concerns about losing one seat in Koshi province.
SC full bench upholds verdict on bogus VAT bill case: Bhatbhateni to pay over Rs 2 billion in taxes and fines
The Full Bench of the Supreme Court has affirmed its previous verdict regarding the fake VAT bill case against Bhatbhateni Departmental Store, accusing them of creating fraudulent bills to evade taxes. The bench comprising Justices Kumar Chudal, Tek Prasad Dhungana, and Balkrishna Dhakal issued the decision on Tuesday. This ruling, in continuation of the Supreme Court’s previous decision, validates the assessment of tax, fines, and interest against Bhatbhateni Departmental Store. According to sources, the department store is obligated to pay a hefty sum of over Rs 2 billion, including taxes, fines, and interest to the state treasury. The current verdict emphasizes that Bhatbhateni engaged in tax evasion, under-reporting VAT, and interest payments, leading to a loss of Rs 1.36 billion to the government.
NEPSE retains double-digit growth on Tuesday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index has seen a double-digit improvement according to the market indicator. The NEPSE index rose by 14.88 points, reaching a stable position at 2,119.61 on Tuesday. In today’s trading session, a total of 5,178,368 shares of 308 companies were traded, resulting in a business volume of Rs 544,217,593. Banking group witnessed a decline of 0.17%, microfinance group by 0.30%, and non-life insurance group by 0.03%. However, sub-index of other group increased by 3.56%.
Nepal ranks 108th in Corruption Perception Index with slight improvement
In the recently released Corruption Perception Index (CPI) by Transparency International, Nepal secured the 108th position with 35 points among 180 countries and territories. The annual report, a flagship publication of the global anti-corruption group based in Berlin, showcased a marginal improvement for Nepal, elevating it by two positions from the 110th rank in 2022. The top-ranking countries in the CPI 2023 are Denmark at number one with 90 points, followed by Finland with 87 points and New Zealand with 85 points.

Loan sharking victims’ march for justice kicks off
Usury victims from various districts have staged ‘March for Justice’ from Mechi Bridge at Kakadvitta in Jhapa district today demanding justice. Participants taking part in the March launched in the initiative of the Usury Victims Peasants Workers Struggle Committee have set out towards Kathmandu on foot with arrangement of food and shelter needed for their journey for justice. There are altogether 50 loan shark victims from Jhapa, Sunsari, Siraha and Saptari districts who aim to reach Kathmandu within 15 days walking from the bordering area in the eastern part of the country to the federal capital via Chitwan, it was shared. Half of the participants are women.
RSP Chairman Lamichhane raises concerns about conspiracy against him
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman, Rabi Lamichhane, has revealed that there is an orchestrated conspiracy aimed at confining him. Speaking at a tea-reception event in Kathmandu on Tuesday, Lamicchane disclosed that various state powers, in collaboration, have devised a plan to restrict him, using the pretext of addressing cooperative issues.
