52 candidates in the fray for 19 NA seats
A total of 52 candidates filed their nomination papers for the 19 National Assembly seat elections scheduled to be held on January 25. The nominations were filed today for various categories in the respective election offices of the seven provinces. The 52 candidates who filed their nominations in the seven provinces today include 17 under the women’s category, six under the Dalit category, eight under persons with disabilities or minority communities, and 21 under other groups, according to the Election Commission.
Finance Ministry to bring concrete proposal on failing cooperatives
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has instructed the Ministry of Finance to come up with a concrete proposal for the systematic resolution of the problems that financial cooperatives’ depositors are facing, as hundreds of thousands of them have suffered of late. During an interaction at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Monday, the Prime Minister directed to submit an appropriate proposal to take concrete measures to troubleshoot the challenges that cooperatives are facing.
JSP calls Central Political Committee meeting
The Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) has called a meeting of its Central Political Committee, on January 10 and 11 at Jyapu Academy Hall in Lalitpur. The meeting is set to commence at 11 am on Wednesday. Purna Basnet, Head of JSP’s Publicity Department, said that the meeting will primarily focus on delving into the party’s political and organizational aspects, along with discussions about the impending party congress.
NEPSE surges by 36.57 points; closes at 2059.42 despite reduced trading volume
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) witnessed a significant surge, increasing by 36.57 points. Today, the market closed at 2059.42 points. The market had plummeted by 36.57 points yesterday in comparison to the previous trading day, to stand at 2022.9 points. Despite the growth, there has been a decrease in trading volume. While the previous day saw transactions worth NPR 5.24 billion, Monday witnessed deals amounting to 4,675,224,902 rupees.
Birgunj shuts down schools amidst severe cold; health issues arise
All community and private schools within Birgunj Metropolitan City have been closed for a week from today due to excessive cold for the past few days. The schools were closed till January 15 at the request of the metropolis as the children started facing problems in teaching learning activities due to the increase in cold aggravated by the cold wave and thick fog. Education Officer Hari Raut shared that the decision was taken to give winter vacation at all community and private schools till January 15 as per the decision of a meeting of the metropolis’ Education Committee on January 7.
PM Dahal urges dialogue for trunk and dedicated lines controversy resolution
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has expressed the need to resolve the conflict over trunk and dedicated lines based on consensus. The Prime Minister suggested that entrepreneurs should consider the option of paying the electricity authority for the resolution of this issue and also explore avenues for industrial operations. During discussions at Singha Durbar with the Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister, secretaries, and other officials, the Prime Minister indicated a conclusion by considering authorities’ directions, including parliamentary committee instructions, taking into account the views of the Attorney General’s office.
NEA cuts off power of Hulas Steel
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has cut off the electricity of another industry amidst the controversy over dedicated and trunk lines. The electricity line of Hulas Steel, operating in the Bara-Parsa Industrial Corridor, was cut off on Monday morning. The industry owes a total of NPR 432.4 million in bills until the month of Mangsir. NEA has cut off the lines of 24 industries that owe more than NPR 50 million.
Ticket distribution for forthcoming NA elections not fair: Dr. Shekhar Koirala
Nepali Congress (NC) leader, Dr. Shekhar Koirala, has criticized the party’s ticket distribution for the National Assembly (NA) elections as unfair and unjust. Commenting on the incident of ticket distribution in the upcoming election, Dr. Koirala expressed on Monday that the event highlighted the leadership’s inability to ensure justice and non-discrimination.
