Deuba faction stresses unity, says NC leadership must take responsibility

KATHMANDU: A meeting of leaders aligned with outgoing Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has concluded that the current party leadership should take responsibility for ensuring unity within the party.

The meeting of former central members from the Deuba faction was held following the Supreme Court’s decision granting legitimacy to the Gagan Thapa-led working committee elected through the special general convention.

Leader Kundan Raj Kafle said the discussion focused on the party’s future direction after the court verdict, especially among those who did not participate in the special general convention.

“Discussions have begun on how to move forward after the Supreme Court’s decision,” he said, adding that the meeting also reflected on the party’s past performance, internal ups and downs, and the need to strengthen unity.

According to Kafle, participants emphasized the importance of boosting the confidence of leaders and cadres to keep the party united. “The Congress must remain united. Self-confidence among all leaders and cadres is essential for unity,” he said.

He also raised concerns over the party’s declining vote base, questioning why public support had weakened despite the party’s active role. “We need to connect with those who are dissatisfied and understand where we went wrong. Why are people unhappy with us? Why are new smaller parties emerging?” he said.

Kafle added that responsibility lies with the party leadership at Sanepa to create an open environment for dialogue. “There is no benefit in shouting within Sanepa’s walls. There must be space for open discussion. Unity is a matter of self-respect, but Sanepa must take responsibility,” he said.
