PM Dahal commits to implement NHRC recommendations for human rights advancement

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has vowed to prioritize the comprehensive implementation of recommendations made by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

Speaking at an event commemorating the 75th International Human Rights Day organized by the NHRC, the Prime Minister assured his commitment to initiating the execution of all NHRC recommendations. He emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to amend the laws related to transitional justice, aiming to ensure a heightened sense of justice for survivors.

“Politically, I am dedicated to making substantive progress in this area,” he affirmed, promising unwavering support to bolster the NHRC’s authority and resources.

Highlighting the Constitution’s identification of 31 fundamental rights for citizens, he reiterated the government’s steadfast dedication to safeguarding human rights.

During the event, NHRC Chair Top Bahadur Magar informed the Prime Minister that only 15.3 percent of NHRC recommendations had been implemented. He urged the government to prioritize the execution of NHRC advice and also highlighted the challenges faced by the NHRC due to structures damaged by natural disasters, calling for expedited resolutions to transitional justice issues.

President of the NGO Federation, Ram Prasad Subedi, acknowledged Nepal’s exemplary constitution while suggesting improvements in the constitutional mechanism and its implementation. He emphasized the need for efficient state mechanisms to prevent disillusionment regarding the republic.

Coordinator of the Fifteenth Human Rights Magna Meet, Dipak Soni, urged the government to actively expedite transitional justice procedures, emphasizing the imperative nature of guaranteeing the human rights of every citizen.

Moreover, the ‘Human Rights Prize’ of Rs 50,000 was awarded to Prakash Bahadur Singh, a media and health worker from Bajura, while rights activist Bhawani Kumari Koirala received the Dayaram Memorial Award during the ceremony.

NHRC member Lily Thapa drew attention to the non-implementation of NHRC recommendations concerning compensation for survivors of human rights violations, urging the government to address this matter promptly.
