PM Dahal justifies TikTok ban as measure to tackle social chaos

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda has defended the recent ban on the popular social network TikTok, asserting that the decision was reached through extensive deliberations and with the consensus of all political parties.

Speaking at a program in Bhaktapur on the occasion of Nepal Sambat, Prime Minister Dahal emphasized the necessity of controlling social chaos for the benefit of society.

Prime Minister Dahal stated that the ban was implemented after careful consideration of the practices adopted by other democratic and developed nations.

He elaborated, “After extensive discussions on curbing the inclination to spread disharmony, disorder, and chaos in society, and to ensure the state fulfills its responsibilities, a consensus was reached among all political parties, including both the ruling party and the opposition.”

Highlighting the gravity of the decision, the Prime Minister acknowledged the potential debates surrounding the ban but emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing and regulating societal disturbances caused by the dissemination of misinformation.

He articulated, “There will be debates about fakes, pros, and cons, but the purpose of the government is to prevent and regulate society from those who spread distortions, inconsistencies, and chaos. We aim to stop what can be stopped and regulate what can be regulated.”

The Prime Minister’s assertion underscores the government’s dedication to maintaining social harmony and family unity by taking proactive measures against activities that may disrupt the well-being of the society.
