Prime Minister Dahal, NC President Deuba, and Leader Shekhar Koirala sign crucial agreement

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba have inked a significant written agreement alongside NC leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala, solidifying their commitment to maintaining the ruling alliance despite changing circumstances in Koshi Province.

The trio’s agreement, forged on a Saturday morning, unequivocally asserts their collective resolve to ensure the steadfastness of the ruling coalition under all circumstances. Following this agreement, NC lawmaker Kedar Karki has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Koshi Province.

Koshi Province Chief Parshuram Khapung formalized Karki’s appointment as Chief Minister on Saturday, following the signatures of 39 UML and 8 NC lawmakers who threw their support behind him.

It is worth noting that Maoist Parliamentary Party leader Indra Bahadur Angbo initially staked a claim on behalf of the alliance for the position of Chief Minister. However, he withdrew his claim at the eleventh hour, recognizing its weakness. This decision was influenced by ongoing discussions among the top leaders, delaying the immediate identification process.

As per the provisions outlined in Article 168 of the Constitution, Karki’s appointment as Chief Minister was ratified. The preceding Chief Minister, Hikmat Kumar Karki, resigned after failing to secure a vote of confidence.
