HURPES Nepal protests in front of the President’s office

KATHMANDU: The Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES) has protested in front of the President’s Office Sheetalniwas, Kathmandu on Monday.

HURPES took to the protest demanding to stop the misuse of the right of the President to pardon punishment contained in Article 276 of the Constitution.

Society has initiated a nationwide campaign against misrule and impunity from Monday.

The protest was attended by civic leaders and rights activists including HURPES founding president Krishna Pahadi.

On the occasion of the Constitution Day, President Ram Chandra Paudel granted amnesty to Yog Dhakal alias Regal, the murder convict passing time for heinous crime, on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers. After the amnesty, the President has been criticized from all sides.

Regal was accused of murdering Chetan Manandhar by kicking him at Dhamboji Chowk in Nepalganj on April 2015.

The bench of the then judge Bishnu Subedi of the District Court Banke found him guilty on the charge of murder in April 2019 and sentenced him to life imprisonment. In addition, 10 other people involved in the incident were sentenced to three years to 10 years imprisonment depending on the nature of their involvement.

Regal was a member of Nepal Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali Congress, when the incident occurred.
