Dengue claims 17 lives and infects over 30,000 in Koshi Province

BIRATNAGAR: The Koshi province has been grappling with a devastating dengue outbreak since mid-July, resulting in the tragic loss of 17 lives and infecting more than 30,000 individuals.

Sunsari district, in particular, has borne the brunt of this crisis, reporting the highest number of dengue infection cases.

In this district alone, 13 people have succumbed to the disease, while 19,432 others have fallen victim to dengue since mid-July, according to Bibechana Chamlagain, the Public Health Officer of Koshi Province Health Directorate in Dhankuta.

The dengue infection has spread like wildfire across all 14 districts of the Koshi province.

Morang, for instance, has reported 4,242 cases of dengue infection, with one fatality attributed to the contagion.

In Jhapa, 2,964 people have tested positive for dengue infection, and unfortunately, two lives have been lost due to the disease.

Similarly, one person in Udayapur has also succumbed to dengue infection.

Patients afflicted by dengue are currently receiving treatment at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Sunsari, as well as in various private and public hospitals across different districts.

The dengue outbreak has also affected Terhathum with 211 infected patients, Panchthar with 338 cases, Ilam with 535, Udayapur with 816, Dhankuta with 432, Bhojpur with 331, Sankhuwasabha with 867, Okhaldhunga with 40, Taplejung with 33, Khotang with 45, and Solukhumbu with 20 cases.

In response to the alarming situation, all local governments in the province have initiated anti-dengue campaigns.
