International Day of Peace: HURPES stages sit in wishing for prevail of peace



KATHMANDU: The Human Rights and Peace Society (HURPES), Kathmandu has staged a sit-in in front of the Bouddhanath Stupa, a world heritage site, wishing for the prevail of sustainable peace.

The protest has been launched to create an atmosphere to maintain peace in Nepal for world peace on the occasion of the International Day of Peace, said Bhagawan Pudasaini, the Society, Kathmandu President.

The program was attended by over five dozen of activists working for human rights and peace.

The participants called for maintaining peace in the country with placards in their hands.

People from various walks of life including the Society’s former presidents Uttam Pudasaini and Homkanta Chaulagain, former chair of Kathmandu Metropolitan City-6 Dipendra Lama, former chair of Gokarnesheor Municipality-6 Ramesh Aryal and the municipality-8 chair Manoj Kumar Dhungana participated in the protest.

The slogan for the protest was, ‘There is no future of violence, there is no alternative to peace’.

Addressing the concluding event, the Society’s central member Ram Krishna Baral stressed the need for concluding the transitional justice process and providing justice to victims soon.

The UN General Assembly declared the Day in 1981 and the Day is observed on September 21 ever since.

The UN declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire across the globe.
