Floods, landslides obstruct traffic on three highways

KATHMANDU: Floods and landslides have obstructed three major national highways in the country.

The Department of Roads has taken measures to ensure limited one-way traffic flow at multiple locations along Highway 55 to alleviate the disruptions.

The Tansen-Ridi-Korala road has been severely impacted by landslides, rendering it impassable.

In addition, the road connecting Chatara-Mulghat-Majhitar-Amarapurdanda-Ganeshchowk within the Tamor Corridor has encountered obstructions at Hewakhola in Majhitar, Panchthar.

Further reports from the Department said that the Pushpalal Midhill Highway has been blocked in Khotang.

Moreover, the Koshi Highway, which spans Dumre-Beshisahar-Chame, Rani-Biratnagar-Itahari-Dharan-Dhankuta-Hile, and Leghuvaghat-Tumlingtar-Khandwari-Num-Kimathanka, is operating with limited one-way access due to flood-related complications.

Specifically, the Dumre-Beshisahar-Cham road is restricted to one-way traffic at Kharakre Bhir in Lamjung.

Similarly, the highway connecting Belhia-Bhairawa-Butwal-Vartung-Ramdi-Syangja-Pokhara under the Siddhartha Highway is also operating under one-way traffic management near the Hiueday Khola of Palpa.

The Department further stated that the road linking Jamunaha-Nepalgunj-Kohalpur-Surkhet-Khulalu-Hilsa within the Karnali Highway is currently restricted to one-way traffic at Dahikhola in Dailekh.

Likewise, the road network encompassing Diktel-Solu-Junbensi-Khare-Jiri Bazar-Tamakoshi-Charikot-Khadichour is under one-way traffic control at the Khawa segment of Dolakha.

Since the onset of the monsoon season, a total of 29 highways have been impacted by blockages at 272 different locations.

Encouragingly, 214 of these locations have been cleared, allowing traffic to flow in both directions.

This year’s floods and landslides have inflicted a staggering Rs 396.665 million in damages upon the nation’s highways, as reported by the Department of Roads.
