KATHMANDU: Mayor Balen Shah of the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has expressed his commitment to spearhead the development of a cricket stadium, provided the government allocates the necessary land.
Mayor Shah, currently visiting Sri Lanka to witness the Nepal-India cricket match, estimated the cost of constructing a stadium equivalent to the one in Sri Lanka to be around NPR 80-90 crores, contingent upon the availability of land.
Sharing his experience on Facebook, Mayor Shah recounted an encounter with Sri Lankan immigration officials who were curious about the sudden surge of Nepali visitors.
He observed that while there were approximately 40-50 Indian cricket enthusiasts present at the stadium, the Nepali contingent numbered between 1,500 and 2,000, with fans coming from various countries. He speculated that the combined expenses of Nepali attendees could reach up to NPR 300 million.
Mayor Shah emphasized the need for a stadium with similar infrastructure in Nepal, asserting that aside from the land requirement, such a facility could be constructed within the aforementioned budget.
He highlighted the potential for significant revenue generation through hosting major sporting events.
Furthermore, Mayor Shah mentioned the initiation of bowling nets in every ward of the metropolis, enhancing facilities for grassroots cricket development.
