Ex-IGP Thakuri surrenders before SC, sent to jail

KATHMANDU: Former Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP) Ramesh Chandra Thakuri surrendered before the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday, two years after he was convicted guilty by the court on Sudan Scam.

He was sent to jail after he surrendered before the court.

Sudan Scam is a name given to misappropriation of Rs 280 million by high-ranking officials of Nepal Police while purchasing Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) for United Nations Peacekeeping in Sudan.

A joint bench of the then Chief Justice Sushila Karki and Justice Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha had pronounced high-ranking officials along with Thakuri guilty on April 30, 2017.

The apex court had also convicted Ex-IGPs Om Bikram Rana and Hem Bahadur Gurung as well as two ex-DIGs, Dipak Singh Thangden and Deep Singh Tangden.

They were sent to jail, while Thakuri who was slapped a year in jail apart from a fine of Rs 40,000, was absconding.
