Army club wins gold for wrestling



POKHARA: Nepal Army club, the departmental Army sporting club, has been a champion in the wrestling competition held under the ongoing Ninth National Games.

The wrestling events under the National Games were held at Danda of Kawasoti-16 in East Nawalparasi.

The Club clinched 14 medals including five gold towards women and one gold towards men followed by three silver and five bronzes. Laxmi Tamang (57 kgs), Sushila Chand (62 kgs), Nirmala Jagari (65 kgs), Mira Auji (68 kgs) and Rachana Shrestha (76 kgs) won gold medals for the team. More, Suresh Chunar added one more gold for the team from men’s match.

Likewise, the Sudur Pashim Province stood second in the medal tally with five gold, one silver and three bronze. All the gold medals in the wrestling events were won by women wrestlers: Damayanti Bohora (50 kgs), Manisha Singh (53 kgs), Sangita Dhami( 55 kgs), Komal Khatri ( 59 kgs) and Hema Bhatta Shrestha (72 kgs).

The Armed Police Force (APF) Club is in the third position with four gold, two sliver and four bronze medals. Kundan Shah ( 57 kgs), Sujit Yadav ( 65 kgs), Umesh Kumar Thakur (70 kgs) and Baliram Yadav (69 kgs) won gold for the team while the Madesh Province clinched three gold, two silver and six bronze medals to secure the fourth position in the competition. Amresh Kumar Yadav ( 61 kgs), Lal Bahadur Yadav ( 86 kgs), and Raj Yadav ( 125 kgs) bagged gold for the Madhesh Province.

The departmental Nepal Police sporting club won one gold, seven silver and six bronze followed by the Lumbini Province’s one gold, one silver and one bronze; and three silver and four bronze by the Province 2. When the Gandaki Province won one silver and five bronze, the Bagmati and Karnali provinces went medal-less in the games.

A total of 150 wrestlers: 59 females and 91 males from 10 teams: three departmental and seven provincial competed for the titles under various age groups. The events were concluded Tuesday at the Tharu Museum hall at Kawasoti-16.
