KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has decided to write to the Press Council Nepal for conducting regular media monitoring as per Journalist Code of Conduct, 2073; and Election Code of Conduct, 2079 during the election of House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly.

The EC’s meeting held on Friday admitted that it is Press Council’s jurisdiction to monitor media. So, it believed the Council would conduct the regular monitoring of the media in line with the constitutional provisions on freedom of expression, press freedom, right to information, and in line with international standards on mass communications for the election to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly.

The EC, however, said it would conduct internal monitoring and write to the Press Council for action in case of anyone found spreading fake news, disinformation and hate speech as per its monitoring.

EC expects cooperation from Press Council on making election free, fair, credible and peaceful.
