Election Commission registers 84 parties for general elections

As many as 84 political parties have registered themselves with the Election Commission to contest in the federal and provincial elections slated for November 20.

According to the Election Commission, the number includes four groups of two or more political parties which are contesting the election with a joint election symbol.

Of the 116 political parties registered with the commission, only 84 will be vying in the upcoming election.

NC registers with EC for Nov 20 elections

The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has registered its party at the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday for the upcoming general election.

The elections are scheduled to be held on November 20 later this year.

Another ruling partner, Maoist Center registered the party on Monday itself.

Similarly, the main opposition CPN-UML has already registered with the EC.

The EC began registering parties for the elections on August 7.

Maoist Center, NSP seek EC approval for joint use of ‘Hammer and Sickle’ poll symbol

The CPN-Maoist Center and the Nepal Samajwadi Party (NSP) have submitted an application before the Election Commission (EC) to the use of the former’s election symbol ‘Hammer and Sickle’ as the common election symbol in November 20 elections.

A Standing Committee meeting of the Maoist Center on Tuesday approved the use of the party election symbol by Dr Baburam Bhattarai-led NSP.

Shortly after the Maoist Center meeting concluded on Tuesday afternoon, the representatives of both the parties reached the EC and submitted an application for common use of the Maoist Center’s election symbol: ‘Hammer and Sickle’.

Bamdev Gautam also to contest under Maoist Center’s election symbol

The CPN Maoist Center’s Standing Committee meeting has accepted the proposal of Bamdev Gautam to contest Nov 20 elections jointly under the former’s election symbol after Dr Baburam Bhattarai.

Party Spokesperson Krishna Bahadur Mahara said that the meeting held in Parisdanda on Tuesday approved the proposal for jointly contesting the election of the Nepal Samajwadi Party led by Bhattarai and the CPN-Unity National Campaign led by Bamdev Gautam.

Following the acceptance of the proposal, Gautam reached the Election Commission to enquire about the legal procedures for running in the November polls under Maoist Center’s election symbol.

NC Prez Deuba nominates 10 women as central members

Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has nominated 10 women as Central Committee members.

NC Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel, issuing a statement on Tuesday, said Deuba nominated 10 women to the Central Committee. The party statute mandates woman central members as per the principle of inclusion.

The new Central members are Kiran Yadav, Radha Ghale, Dhana Khatiwada, Urmila Thapaliya, Rukmini Koirala, Kalyani Rizal, Goma Bhattarai, Ganga Shahi, Laxmi Khatiwada and Sita Devkota.

NRB instructs BFIs to tighten procedure for import/export

The Central Bank, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), has instructed banks and financial institutions (BFIs) to tighten the procedure of import of goods to discourage and control money laundering possible through import and export business.

In light of payment for import of goods being settled illegally, the NRB has instructed all the banks and financial institutions (BFIs) to crack down on it.

The Central Bank concluded that the use of black money (undisclosed amount) has increased in import and export trade.

Consumer price of fuel to remain unchanged

Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has decided not to reduce the consumer price of fuel.

Though it received reduced price of petroleum products from India on Tuesday, NOC said it has decided to keep the price unchanged due to the fact that the organization still had large debt obligations.

“We still have a lot of debt and payment arrears, so we could not adjust the price now,” said NOC Executive Director Umesh Kumar Thani.

He added that the price could be slashed in future after NOC reaches a financially strong position.

Nepal sees 848 new coronavirus cases, one death in past 24 hours

Nepal recorded a total of 848 new cases of coronavirus and one death in the past 24 hours as of Tuesday.

Of the confirmed cases, 399 were detected through the RT-PCR method and 449 through the Antigen method.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, a total of 5,619 swab samples were tested in the past 24 hours.

Of them, 2,722 samples were tested through RT-PCR and 2,897 through the Antigen method.

NEPSE falls by 24.83 points 

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index has lost 24.83 points on Tuesday and settled at 2,041.06 points.

The index could not retain the sentiment of investors that appeared on Monday, when the market index surged by 55.88 points.

The index that opened at 2,069.38 points made an intraday high of 2,088.23, an intraday low of 2,035.47 and finally settled at 2,041.06 points today.

A total of 6,406,738 units of shares of 221 companies changed hands via 43,392 transactions, resulting in a daily turnover of Rs 2.73 billion. The turnover on Monday was Rs 2.43 billion.
