54 children die of lichy-induced high fever in Muzaffarpur



PATNA: A total of 54 children have died of high fever in Muzaffarpur District of Bihar State of India. The ailing children were diagnosed with acute encephalitis syndrome (AES). As many as 46 children died while undergoing treatment at Shree Krishan Medical College at Muzaffarpur District alone.

Similarly, eight children breathed their last while undergoing treatment at Kejriwal Matri Sadan.  A total of 179 children had been admitted to the hospitals after complaints of high fever and stomach ache  since January 1.

Doctors involved in the treatment of the patients have pointed out lichy fruit behind the death of children.

All the children had fallen sick after eating lichy. According to doctors it is harmful to eat this fruit during empty stomach. This can be more harmful  to the children, according to doctors.

Excessive consumption of lichy behind death

Lichy is the main agricultural production of Muzaffarpur. Children in this region eat lichy fruits since early morning even as snacks. They suffer from metabolic related problem due to excessive consumption of lichy fruits. Further, lichy contains a harmful chemical called Methylene cyclopropyl – Glycine (MCPG). It will affect mind when eaten during empty stomach.
