Cyclone Vayu changes its course, heavy rainfall and storm expected

NEW DELHI: Cyclone Vayu, which had on Wednesday intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, has slightly changed its course, according to Indian media reports.

The cyclone was expected to make landfall this afternoon today. However, with the change of course, it is not likely to hit the Indian state of Gujarat.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the storm will now pass nearby from the Dwarka and other regions and that its effects will be seen on the coastal regions combined with strong winds and rain. The Gujarat state government has however shifted more than three lakh people from low-lying areas of Kutch and Saurashtra regions.

The IMD said the Cyclone Vayu is likely to move northwest for some time and then head towards Northwest.

India has put the Navy, Coast Guard, Indian Army, Air Force and the Border Security Force (BSF) on high alert. (Agencies)
