KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to carry out a fair investigation and take action in the custodial death of Sundar Harijan.

In a statement NHRC issued on Friday, its spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel drew the attention of the government and other concerned authorities to ensure that such incident would not repeat in the days to come and protect people’s right to life.

Harijan of Nepalgunj, Banke-2 was found dead while serving time in Rolpa district prison on May 18. The cause of his death was reported to be a suicide.

Harijan was serving a jail sentence instead of a criminal Bijay Bikram Shah of Surkhet, who was sentenced for illegal arms and organised crime. Shah would have been released on March 6 next year. But, he was released on January 12 after Harijan was sent to prison on charge of stealing mobile phones.

Meanwhile, the human rights watchdog has launched a field investigation into the incident.
