15, 536 held based on CCTV footage in last 10 months

KATHMANDU: As many as 15, 536 people have landed in police net for violating traffic rules in the last 10 months (between July 17, 2018, to April 28, 2019) based on CCTV footages.

Metropolitan Police Circle, Gaushala arrested taxi driver Kamal Bahadur Shrestha few days after he left a diabetic patient on the roadside to die in Bouddha in March 2019.

On April 29, Metropolitan Traffic Police Division called Akash Pudasaini of Lainchaur to Baggikhana for breaching traffic rules based a CCTV footage. When he reached the office, the traffic police showed him footage of him.

Likewise, traffic police handed over around Rs 2.411 million left behind in the taxi to the concerned people in the fiscal 2017/18 with the help of CCTV footages.

These are the benefits of the installation of CCTV, to mention but a few. The installation of CCTV has proved instrumental in maintaining peace, minimizing traffic accidents and monitoring security system.

According to SSP Kiran Bajracharya, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Police Office, the CCTV footage is a modern technology that helps maintain peace, curb criminal activities and minimize road accidents.

A total of 440 CCTV cameras have been installed in the Kathmandu Valley, according to Metropolitan Police Office, Ranipokhari.

Of them, 22 cameras have been installed at four major checkpoints – Nagdhunga, Tinpiple, Farping, and Jagati. Preparations are underway to install CCTV cameras in additional 75 places.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) started installing CCTV cameras since 2007. Eleven CCTV cameras had been installed at the start.

According to Bajracharya, there are two technical teams assigned to fix the CCTV camera when they go phut.

Bajracharya went on to elaborate that there are two types of cameras – PTZ and Fixed. PTZ can be operated at the 360 degrees and take photos from all directions. There are 396 PTZ cameras intalled in the valley currently. Similarly, fixed cameras, which look small in size, have been installed in 44 different places. They record videos which last for about a month.

Ishwarman Dangol, the spokesperson of KMC, told Khabarhub that the installation of CCTV cameras mainly helps curb criminal activities and manage garbage.

KMC has handed over a check of Rs 58.1 million to the Metropolitan Police Range Office to install CCTV cameras in the capital.
