Household air pollution kills 8 lakh people in India annually: Report



NEW DELHI: Around 8 lakh people die prematurely every year in India due to air pollution, a report has said.

According to a report prepared by prepared by researchers from the Cornell University, University of California Berkeley, Indian Institute of Technology of Delhi and Urban Emissions, and Max Planck Institute of Germany, while some 11 lakh Indians die prematurely every year due to air pollution, around 8 lakh are the victims of household air pollution.

Meanwhile, another 3 lakh people are killed prematurely every year due to household pollution from outdoor sources, Indian media reports have said citing the report.

According to the report, the use of solid fuels such as firewood, dung, leaves, among others, cause household air pollution. Media reports have said that around 16 crore households in India still use solid fuels. In India, firewood is the most common solid fuel.

The report said that the pollution caused by solid fuels is higher than the pollution caused by transportation. (Agencies)
