Prachanda confident about forging an electoral alliance with NC

Chairperson of the CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has reiterated that the current coalition in the incumbent government would continue until all three levels elections, local, provincial and federal.

“The alliance is intact at present. It will not break. It will continue not only until local level poll, but until the provincial and federal elections,” said the former Prime Minister talking to media-persons at Bharatpur Airport today.

UML to make public election manifesto on April 22

KATHMANDU: The main opposition, CPN-UML, has decided to make public its election manifesto and commitment letter for the local level election on April 22.

The election manifesto and local commitment letter are going to be made public on the occasion of the party’s foundation day, i.e. 21 days before the local level election, a party leader said.

The party also formed a task force to draft election manifesto. The party’s Central Committee (CC) meeting that concluded on Thursday formed a task force under the leadership of Senior Vice-chairman Ishwor Pokharel for the purpose.

The task force includes Vice-Chairman Yubaraj Gyawali, deputy general secretaries Pradip Gyawali and Bishnu Rimal, Politburo member Devendra Dahal, leaders Prabhu Sah, Manoj Jung Thapa, ex-Finance Minister Yuvaraj Khatiwada, Prabha Baral, Dinesh Chandra Devkota and Sushil Gyawali.

PM Deuba underscores transparent local government

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said the local governments should be accountable and transparent in order to address people’s aspiration.

PM Deuba said it while inaugurating the newly constructed building of Chapakot Municipality at Suntalinagar on Thursday.

Local governments are the closest government to the people, PM Deuba said, adding that the activities should therefore be transparent.

NC should thwart opposition parties’ illusion: Senior leader Poudel

TANAHU: Senior leader of the Nepali Congress (NC) Ram Chandra Poudel has said NC should thwart the illusion spread by the opposition parties and persuade people with the works carried by the party. It would help ensure a majority of votes to the NC, he argued.

NEA to purchase electricity from India by paying up to Rs 38 per unit

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) is to purchase electricity from India at Rs 38 per unit.

NEA Executive Director Kulman Ghising said that electricity was being purchased at high prices to meet the demand of Nepal due to the high price of electricity in the Indian market.

Speaking at a press conference held at NEA on Thursday, Ghising said that Nepal would offer the highest tariff for importing electricity. Nepal had earlier been buying electricity from the Indian open market at an average rate of Rs 8 per unit.

Home Ministry formulates integrated security policy

The government has passed an integrated security policy for local elections to be held on May 13.

A meeting of the security committee chaired by Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand on Thursday passed a “local level election integrated security policy”. “The security committee meeting has adopted the necessary integrated security policy for the elections,” said Home Ministry spokesman Phanindra Mani Pokhrel.

Dr Arzu to contest elections from Kailali-5

Nepali Congress leader Dr Arzu Deuba has said she will contest elections to the House of Representatives from constituency-5 of Kailali district.

Speaking at a press meet organized by Nepal Press Union in Dhangadi, Central Committee member of Nepali Congress Arzu said she will contest the elections from Kailali-5, expressing belief that she has close attachment with the people of Kailali.

CPN-US Chair Nepal refutes Prachanda’s remark, rules out possibility of cabinet shuffle

CPN-Unified Socialist (CPN-US) Chair Madhav Kumar Nepal has ruled out the possibility of cabinet shuffle, refusing to accept one of ruling coalition leader’s remarks.

Ruling coalition partner CPN-Maoist Center’s Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, who had been in Janakpur three days ago, revealed that efforts were underway to make changes in government.

From the very place Janakpur, Chair Nepal on Thursday refuted Prachanda’s statement.

Addressing the extended meeting of the party’s Madhesh Pradesh chapter, he said, “The government will not change. This incumbent government will hold the upcoming elections.”

FM Dr Khadka condoles demise of former US Secretary of State

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Narayan Khadka has expressed his deep condolences on the sad passing away of former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. She was 84.

Madeleine died of cancer on Wednesday. Minister Dr Khadka has offered his deep condolences on Madeleine’s demise stating that she will be remembered by the people of Nepal for her contributions to strengthening Nepal-US ties and her compassion for humanity.

She had served as the US Secretary of State in the Bill Clinton administration.

PM Deuba highlights need to protect current alliance till polls

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said keeping intact the current five-party alliance till the upcoming elections was the need of the hour.

Speaking at a program organized in Damauli, Tanahu, on Thursday, by the Nepali Congress, Tanahu in his honor, the party president insisted on the need for going with this unity to safeguard democracy.

“The presence of this alliance is necessary till the elections to the House of Representatives, and Province Assembly.“

Dr. Koirala faction warns of forming parallel panels against NC prez’s unilateral tendencies

Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala faction has warned of forming parallel committees in the party’s sister organizations against the party president’s unilateral decision-making tendencies.

Leader Koirala had invited a limited number of central members, including some former leaders of various sister organizations such as Nepal Student Union (NSU), Tarun Dal and party’s women-wing Nepal Women Association, among others, for discussions at his liaison office in Baluwatar on Thursday.

NC leaders participating in the meeting expressed their dissatisfaction over party President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s unilateral actions.

NC President and Prime Minister Deuba on Wednesday appointed Dujang Sherpa as NSU president and Bidhwan Gurung as Tarun Dal president.

Gen Secy Thapa picked coordinator of NC election manifesto draft panel

Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has nominated General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa as the coordinator of the local level election manifesto preparation committee.

The NC president’s nomination comes on the eve of the Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting that will initiate process to select local election candidates.

NC CWC has been called for tomorrow (Friday) to make crucial decisions in the run up to the local polls slated for May 13.
