Women, children more affected from climate change impacts: Minister Regmi



WASHINGTON D.C.: Nepal has drawn attention of the international community stating that there was a serious impact on people’s livelihood due to increased dryness in the rivers and snow melting as the result of rise in temperature.

Nepal has also urged the developed countries to fulfill the commitment made to provide 100 billion US dollars to the developing countries for the reduction of climate change impacts. Likewise, Nepal has also asked the developed countries to double the amount by 2025 and take initiatives to reduce the impacts and hazards of climate change on women and children.

Addressing the ongoing UN 66th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on Wednesday in New York, Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Uma Regmi expressed concerns towards increasing gender inequality and insecurity of women and children due to climate change.

“Nepal is making process in ensuring the meaningful participation of women and girls in every walk of life and achieve gender equality and sustainable development,” Regmi added. On the occasion, Regmi said Nepal’s constitution has ensured at least 33 per cent participation of women in federal parliament and province assemblies. According to her, Nepal has given high priority to gender equality and women empowerment in its development priority. “Nepal has been preparing gender-friendly budget, the first in the South Asia,” she reminded.
