106 persons arrested for driving under the influence during Holi



KATHMANDU: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division has arrested 106 people for driving under the influence of alcohol during Holi celebrations in Kathmandu Valley on Thursday.

Chief of the Division, Senior Superintendent of Police, Umesh Raj Joshi, said a total of 906 drivers were taken into custody for violating traffic rules such as riding without helmets, carrying three persons and reckless driving.

“During the check from morning till 6 pm, 106 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol,” said SSP Joshi.

The traffic police had deployed more than 1,300 traffic police in Kathmandu to make the Phagu Purnima (Holi) festival safe. The traffic division had mobilized manpower as per a traffic management plan to rid the Holi festival of accidents.

The division had set up checkpoints at 68 different places in the valley in view of the risk of possible accidents during the Holi celebrations.

SSP Joshi said that the checkpoints had been tightened since the morning keeping in mind that everyone is in a festive mood during the festival of colors. He also informed that there were no untoward incidents in Kathmandu due to strict traffic management for Holi.
