Sports should be isolated from politics: UML Chair Oli



JHAPA: CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has argued that the sports sector should be kept in isolation from politics.

Addressing the inaugural session of the Fifth Jhapa Gold Cup football tournament at Domalal Rajbansi Stadium in Jhapa Saturday, Oli said sports is not a political party and it should be kept aside from politics while urging different sides to unite for the development of the sports sector.

The Domalal Rajbansi family had given land for the construction of the stadium in Birtamod. Ten different teams are participating in the tournament in which the winner will bag Rs 1,255,000 in cash while the first runner up with getting Rs 605,000.

The organizer said the most valuable player will get a motorbike while the best goalkeeper, best defender, best mid-fielder and best coach will receive Rs 21,000 each. The highest scorer striker will get Rs 25,000 in cash. Similarly, man of the match of each game will receive Rs 9,999.

Meanwhile, Satdobato Youth Club kicked off with a win against Jawalakhel Youth Club on the inaugural day of this year’s fifth edition of Jhapa Gold Cup and qualified into the quarterfinals. In the match today, Satdobato defeated Jawalakhel 4-2 on penalties. The teams had played a 2-2 draw in regulation time earlier.

UML Chair Oli also laid a foundation stone of a river embankment in the Ratuwa River in Kamal Rural Municipality-6 in Jhapa. Oli said the local residents here won’t have to bear losses from the Ratuwa River during the monsoon after the construction of a well-managed embankment.

He also hoped for the timely completion of the embankment stretching 12-kilometers.
