Home Ministry warns of action against fake news spreaders



KATHMANDU: The Home Ministry has warned of action against the spreaders of fake news, photos and videos on social networking sites.

Stating that such activities would create provocations, spread rumors and disturb social harmony, the Ministry in a statement, urged general people to report such activities (if any) to the police or the administration office.

The warning came after the flurry of fake news, photos and videos relating to Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and the National Investigation Department through social sites like YouTube and TikTok, the statement said, adding that such activities are punishable as per Section 47 of the Electronic Transaction Act, 2063.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has drawn its attention to the fake news relating to the announcement of public holidays in 2079 BS circulated through various media. Dismissing such reports, the Ministry, in a statement, said that public holidays published in the Nepal Gazette as decided by the Cabinet would be official.
