7 killed, 85 injured as 6.2-magnitude quake hits Indonesia



JAKARTA: An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook Indonesia’s Sumatra Island on Friday, killing at least seven people and leaving 85 injured.

At least four people, including two children, were killed in Pasaman district and three others died in the neighboring district of West Pasaman.

As many as 410 houses and buildings were damaged, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the strong yet shallow earthquake struck about 41 miles northwest of Bukittinggi, a hilly town in West Sumatra province. It was centered about 7.4 miles below the Earth’s surface.

The tremors were felt as far as in Singapore and Malaysia.
