S Jayashankar is new Foreign Minister of India



NEW DELHI: Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Foreign Secretary in 1st Modi Government, is now new Minister of External Affairs (popularly known as Foreign Minister) of India. He succeeds Sushma Swaraj.

S Jayashankar was sworn in as Cabinet minister on May 30, after the swearing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi who begins his second consecutive term. Jayshankar has distinguished career as one of the renowned Indian diplomat. He joined Indian Foreign Service in 1977. He had previously served as Indian Ambassador to the United States, China, Czech Republic and High Commissioner to Singapore besides handling special foreign assignments in different parts of the world and in neighboring countries including Nepal.

S Jaishankar in capacity of Indian Foreign Secretary has visited Kathmandu as a special envoy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when the Constitution of Nepal was awaiting formal execution from September 20, 2015. He has held discussions with Nepal’s political leadership and high-ranking officials on different facets of bilateral relations before. (Agencies)
